Grid Connection in Wind (RES) Projects: A Step-by-Step Process

The electrical infrastructure process in wind farms, from the internal collection grid to the switchyard and grid connection.

Wind power plants (RES) need a robust electrical infrastructure to transfer the energy generated by turbines to the grid safely and efficiently. No matter how high-tech the turbines are, the performance and reliability of the plant drop when the electrical system carrying the generated energy is not built correctly. This infrastructure is the invisible but critical backbone of a wind farm.

1. Internal collection grid

The medium voltage from each turbine is brought together on site and carried to a central collection point. Demanding terrain, long distances and topographic challenges require special engineering at this stage. Underground MV cables are usually preferred for reliability and visual cleanliness.

2. Switchyard

The collected energy is stepped up to the appropriate voltage level at the switchyard and prepared for transfer to the grid. At this stage:

  • Installation of power transformers
  • MV/HV circuit breakers and disconnector systems
  • Protection and control panels
  • Earthing and lightning protection systems

must be built with correct engineering.

3. Grid connection and testing

Connecting the plant to the grid requires full compliance with the technical conditions of the relevant distribution/transmission operator. Before and after connection:

  1. Insulation and continuity tests
  2. Protection relay tests
  3. Synchronisation checks
  4. Commissioning procedures

are completed in full.

Success in wind projects depends as much on the quality of the electrical infrastructure connecting it to the grid as on the turbine itself.

Field discipline in demanding terrain

Wind farms are mostly built in high-altitude, windy and hard-to-access regions. Safe and efficient execution under these conditions requires an experienced field team, correct logistics planning and strict occupational safety management.

ARAL’s role in wind infrastructure

At ARAL we provide expert field solutions for the internal collection grids, switchyards and grid-connection works of wind power plants. With safe, efficient and standards-compliant execution even in demanding terrain, we ensure your investment operates at full capacity from day one.
