6 Critical Points to Watch in Substation Installation
Key considerations in the installation of distribution substations: siting, safety, earthing and commissioning.
Substations are the heart of power distribution infrastructure. A correctly built substation secures a facility’s energy supply for decades, while a faulty installation means constant faults, safety risk and high operating costs. Here are six critical points that should not be overlooked for a solid installation.
1. Siting and accessibility
A substation should be located where the maintenance team can reach it easily, where there is no flood risk and where adequate ventilation can be provided. Manoeuvring space should be planned for emergency response and equipment replacement.
2. Correct sizing
Transformer capacity should account not only for the current load but also for future growth. Choosing too small creates capacity problems, while choosing too large creates unnecessary cost and low efficiency.
3. Earthing and safety
The earthing system is indispensable for both personnel safety and equipment protection. Correct earthing resistance, equipotential busbars and lightning protection systems must be installed in accordance with standards.
4. Protection and control
- MV/LV circuit breakers and disconnectors
- Protection relays and their settings
- Overcurrent and short-circuit protection
- Monitoring and remote-control infrastructure
These systems limit damage in the event of a fault, protecting both the equipment and businesses that require continuity.
5. Site security and regulation
In kiosk-type substations, site security (fencing, locks, warning signs) and prevention of unauthorised access are essential. The entire installation must comply with the relevant regulations and distribution-company specifications.
6. Testing and commissioning
The job is not done once installation is complete. Before commissioning, insulation tests, relay tests and on-load checks must be carried out in full, and the entire process must be recorded.
A substation is not something to “install and forget” but an asset to be built correctly and monitored regularly.
